Captains of IPL Teams

Published by anIndian under Cricket, IPL, India Edit This

When Indian Premier League (IPL 2008) was launched, it was mainly an Indian show with some international flavour to it. The teams were formed surrounding Indian cricket stalwarts. Most of the teams had a so called Icon player, who got the best salary in the team. When IPL 2008 commenced, seven out of the eight teams had Indian captains.

Bangalore Royal Challengers was led by Rahul Dravid, Chennai Super Kings was led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Deccan Chargers had VVS Laxman at the top, Virender Sehwag at the helm of Delhi Daredevils, Sachin Tendulkar leading the Mumbai Indians, Sourav Ganguly leading the Kolkata Knight Riders and Yuvraj Singh leading Kings XI Punjab. The odd team out was Rajasthan Royals, led by Australian Shane Warne. To prove a point or what, Shane Warne led the Rajasthan Royals to lift the championship title unexpectedly.

Slowly and steadily, the Indians are now giving way to captaincy by foreign players. Rahul Dravid made way for Kevin Pietersen to lead Bangalore Royal Challengers. Brendon McCullum was made the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders after much controversy about the multiple-captains theory proposed by coach John Buchanan. Adam Gilchrist is leading the rejuvenated Deccan Chargers. That makes it four foreign captains and four Indian captains for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009.

Let us see how it goes and who wins the championship this time.
